Dans (Sverige) – solo version

Frédéric Gies

Dans (Sverige) – solo version

Dans (Sverige) is a new work taking the shape of two independent pieces – a solo version and a group version, which can be seen as two sides of the same coin. The solo version, presented at Skogen, is danced by Frédéric Gies. The premises of this new work lie in two backward movements: looking back into the prolific dance materials of the 35 pieces Gies created since they moved to Sweden twelve years ago, and looking back at the few traces left of Maison de Fous (Dårhuset), a 1920 work by Les Ballets Suédois, which can be considered as one of the first manifestations of Modernism in Sweden. While the piece looks into the past and excavates the uncanny kinship between Gies’ work and Maison de Fous, it also takes a sharp look at the present, positioning itself against the fetishization of national origins and making use of the figure of the “Fou” as a subversive, irreverent force destabilizing oppressive power structures.

About the artist:

Frédéric Gies is a dancer and choreographer based in Sweden. Their dance pieces bring to the forefront the capacity of dance to speak without having to demonstrate or represent anything. Drawing from their former training in ballet, their encounter with specific trends of contemporary dance at the beginning of the 90s, their dance floor experiences in techno clubs and raves and their study of somatic practices, Frédéric Gies approaches form as possibilities rather than constraints.

Dans (Sverige) is also playing on 1st of May. Come and celebrate this day with us! On the day that celebrates the international workers movement, we are presenting a new dance piece by Frédéric Gies. The work contains many links to what this day historically stands for in terms of activism and resistance against structures of power.

It connects to a wide range of social and political movements, from the French Revolution to anti-fascism, feminism, anti-nationalism and anti-capitalism. The piece carries a wealth of references to protest and activism, with the body and movement at its center. So what could be more fitting to do on a day when the workers movement takes centre stage?
