Evolve This: A Work-in-Progress Presentation
We are taught to think of the theory of evolution as a theory of strength, of submission and binaries. The theory of evolution goes beyond mere ‘theory’; it permeates our social imagination and shapes images of who prevails, who adapts, what is considered the norm and what is cast as deviation. Female, non-binary and trans bodies in particular have long been overlooked in the narrative of our origins or portrayed as less significant. Competition has been overstated as evolution’s engine, while collaboration, symbiosis, and chance have been written out.
In her ongoing artistic research, the choreographer and performer Eva Meyer-Keller explores the complexities of evolutional theory through a choreographic and feminist lense: How do scientific models and narratives imprint themselves on our bodies? How do they shape movements, form desire, identity and community? When evolution is understood not as the heroic survival of the fittest, but as a complex process of symbiosis, cooperation and chance, a different picture of our evolutionary history emerges – one that produces difference, rather than excluding it.
“Evolve This” shares a moment in this research: part lecture, part conversation, part sound collage, and spatial exploration. This work-in-progress presentation is created and performed together with her collaborators, sound artist and author Jana Sotzko and dramaturge Emilia Schlosser.
